What is the DITALS certification?
The DITALS certification was begun in 1994 and is given by the University of Siena for Foreigners. Its scope is to evaluate and verify the degree of preparation (theoretical and practical) in Italian didactics to foreigners of those would like to work in this field.
In 2004 the Level I DITALS (or PRE-DITALS) certification was introduced which is closely related to the Level II DITALS and has 2 main objectives: a) to allow those who don’t have the necessary prerequisites to take the Level II exam to obtain instead a basic training in Italian didactics as a foreign language; provide a first step towards getting the Level II certification.
The preparation course for the Exam is accredited by the University of Siena and offers the following, necessary requisites (30-hours formation course given by an accredited institution), to take the exam. The preparation course for DITALS is offered by the Leonardo da Vinci Schools.
The form consists of an in-depth examination of a few components of the basic course, therefore making it an essential element.
Technical analysis of didactic material (section A of the exam):
examine some of the administered trials in previous sessions and, depending on the relative answers to the questions posed in the work group, tips are given relevant to the different typologies of analysis that are characteristic of this section of the exam (level of the pupils for whom the material is meant; objectives of the didactic units or of the learning style for analysis; kind of activity etc.).
Setting up of the didactic unit and of the related activities (section B):
the administered trials in the previous sessions are analyzed starting from general information about what is asked in each subsection (making of a didactic unit; setting up of an activity; the making of evaluations).
The participants are then asked to elaborate on a few points starting with the supplied materials. After having analyzed, in detail, the developed hypothesis of different work groups, an example for each subsection is given.
An in-depth examination of knowledge in glottodidactics and sociolinguistics (section C):
this part of exam preparation aims to provide the participant with a series of reference grids that help with the successive phase of individual study. In particular, after having examined concepts and terminology of basic linguistics and sociolinguistics, particular attention is paid to glottodidactics (basic principles, main approaches and prospective theories; the common European square; recent developments).
Practical trial (section D):
Base course exercises (analysis and related observations) also make up training for this section of the exam).
Practice exam.
The legal value of the DITALS exam in Italy and abroad is subject to the ordinance of each state and of each institution: in some cases it is considered a title and gives people the right to economical and professional incentives, many universities count the points obtained by the DITALS exam towards a Master in Italian or they convert the credits to count towards other specializations.
In general, the Certification of didactic competence of Italian for foreigners constitutes, to all of the main institutions working in this field, a precise parameter and objective to evaluate the formative profile of the student taking Italian for foreigners.
It is possible to take the DITALS Italian language Exam of the University of Siena for Foreigners through the Rome or Florence Leonardo da Vinci school at difference times throughout the year.
